Clean your mattress at home with the Kärcher Puzzi 8/1

Cleaning stains, everyday dirt and odour from a mattress — with the right technique, minimal moisture and thorough drying.

Why mattress cleaning requires extra care

A mattress is thicker and denser than sofa fabric, so moisture takes longer to dry out of it. Excess moisture can penetrate the inner layers of the mattress and create a risk of mould or odour, so mattress cleaning needs to be approached more carefully than other upholstered surfaces.

Use a minimal amount of liquid

Use as little cleaning solution as possible — light, even passes rather than heavy soaking. The goal is to clean the surface, not saturate the mattress with water.

Do several suction-only passes

After applying the cleaning solution, do several additional passes using suction only (with no more liquid added) to draw as much moisture as possible back out of the mattress.

Clean early in the day

We recommend cleaning in the morning or early afternoon, so the mattress has as much time as possible to dry before evening. This reduces the risk of having to sleep on a still-damp surface.

Ensure ventilation or use an air blower

Open windows and, if possible, use a fan or air blower directed at the mattress. This significantly speeds up drying and reduces how far moisture penetrates into the deeper layers.

Don't use the mattress until it's completely dry

  • Sleeping on a damp mattress pushes moisture deeper and extends drying time
  • It increases the risk of mould and unpleasant odour
  • Before use, touch the mattress in several spots to confirm it's fully dry
  • If needed, use a spare bed for one night

Cleaning urine stains from a mattress

First blot up excess moisture with a clean cloth or paper towel — never rub, as this pushes the stain deeper. Treat the spot with a stain remover or enzyme cleaner, let it work according to the manufacturer's instructions, then use the Kärcher Puzzi 8/1 with several suction passes to draw out the remaining moisture and dirt. Make sure it dries thoroughly to prevent the odour from returning.

An honest note on results

The Kärcher Puzzi 8/1 handles surface stains, dust and everyday dirt very well. However, it's not designed to fully eliminate mould, allergens, bed bugs, or deep biological contamination — for those cases, we recommend a professional assessment.
